About

Matthew Christiana - Partner

Matt’s commitment to the law is driven by a singular mission: to protect and advance the constitutional and civil rights of individuals who have suffered from profound injustices due to police and prosecutorial misconduct. Throughout his career, Matt has been a steadfast advocate for his clients, whether serving as an appellate public defender in New York City, as an associate at a New York law firm, or as a civil rights attorney.

Working both individually and as a key member of various legal teams, Matt has confronted powerful entities, including state and city governments, police departments, prosecutors’ offices, and large insurance corporations. His contributions have played a critical role in securing justice for his clients. Some of the significant achievements in which Matt has been involved include:

  • Helping secure a $24 million settlement for two wrongfully incarcerated clients who collectively spent over 46 years in prison for a crime they did not commit.

  • Contributing to the exoneration of clients who collectively served over 46 years in prison for crimes they did not commit.

  • Assisting in overturning the wrongful conviction of a woman who spent 43 years in prison.

  • Assisting in the exoneration of a man wrongfully imprisoned for 24 years.

  • Securing a conviction reversal for a man who served 6 years due to Brady violations.

  • Successfully challenging the constitutionality of a New York state law, rendering the conviction overturned.

  • Securing multiple sentence reductions on appeal.

  • Securing the reversal/dismissal of a conviction due to a defective indictment.

  • Securing settlements against the City of New York for violations experienced by clients on Rikers Island.

Matt’s dedication to justice, whether working independently or collaboratively, has made a significant impact, ensuring that those wronged by the system receive the redress they deserve.
