Practice Areas

Our work is to defend our clients’ liberty, enforce their rights, and deter the abuse of state power.

Civil Rights

In our civil rights practice, we represent plaintiffs in lawsuits against police officers, prosecutors, prison guards, and other government officials who have violated the Constitution or engaged in other forms of serious misconduct. We bring civil rights actions based on:

  • Police and prosecutor misconduct (e.g., false arrest, fabrication of evidence, malicious prosecution, excessive force)
  • Wrongful conviction
  • Conditions of confinement (e.g., failure to protect, denial of medical care, over-detention)
  • Wrongful death
  • Discrimination on the basis of physical disability, mental illness, race, gender, religion, ideology, etc.
  • Other torts (e.g., defamation, false imprisonment, battery, sexual assault)

APPEALS &
POST-CONVICTION

In our appeals and post-conviction practice, we represent criminal defendants on direct appeal and in post-conviction proceedings, including:

  • Direct appeals in the New York Appellate Division and Court of Appeals
  • Direct appeals in the California Court of Appeal and Supreme Court
  • Post-conviction and collateral proceedings in New York and California trial courts based on police and prosecutor misconduct, actual innocence, newly discovered evidence, ineffective assistance of counsel, recently enacted sentencing laws, etc.
