Matt is a dedicated advocate for individuals whose constitutional and civil rights have been violated, particularly as a result of police and prosecutorial misconduct. He brings extensive experience as an appellate public defender in New York City, a civil rights attorney, and a former associate at a leading law firm. He is also admitted as an expert in post-conviction litigation in New York State court.

Throughout his career, Matt has represented clients in high-stakes cases against powerful entities such as state and city governments, police departments, prosecutors’ offices, and large insurance corporations. Whether working independently or as a key member of legal teams, Matt has consistently delivered significant results, securing justice for those wronged by the system. Key achievements Matt has contributed to include:

  • Helping secure a $24 million settlement for two wrongfully incarcerated clients who collectively spent over 46 years in prison for a crime they did not commit.
  • Helping secure the exoneration of multiple clients who served, collectively, over 119 years in prison for crimes they did not commit.
  • Securing reversals, dismissals, or vacaturs of convictions and/or sentences on appeal;
  • Successfully challenging the constitutionality of a New York state law, resulting in the conviction being overturned.
  • Securing settlements against the City of New York for constitutional violations inflicted by law enforcement officials.

Matt earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where he attended on a merit-based scholarship and was selected for membership to the Order of the Coif. He is admitted to practice in New York State, as well as in the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
